 Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) also known as "Bataan Day" is a national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the bravery of Filipinos and American Soldiers when the Japanese occupied the Philippines during World War II. The day Bataan fell into Japanese hands was declared a national holiday in the Philippines wherein, the greatness of our Filipino soldiers is marked every April 9 where the events that occurred 80 years ago will remain engraved in the national memory. “Bataan has fallen. The Philippine-American troops on this war-ravaged and bloodstained peninsula have laid down their arms. With heads bloody but unbowed, they have yielded to the superior force and numbers of the enemy.” A radio broadcast message, written by Captain Salvador P. Lopez was announced by Third Lieutenant Normando Ildefonso Reyes. The announcement signaled the surrender of Philippine-Americans to the Japanese troops. Lent, in the Christian church, is a period of penitential preparation for Easter. In Filipino, we also call it kwaresma wherein Filipino people recall Christ’s death and resurrection. The Philippines is known to be a Christian country, and most of Filipinos are devout Catholics. There are also multiple traditions and practices in the Philippines during the Lenten season that is still existent and practiced even up to the present times. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season. It is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God by receiving an imposition of ashes on their foreheads on the first day of Lent.
