Brave Souls

Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) also known as "Bataan Day" is a national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the bravery of Filipinos and American Soldiers when the Japanese occupied the Philippines during World War II. The day Bataan fell into Japanese hands was declared a national holiday in the Philippines wherein, the greatness of our Filipino soldiers is marked every April 9 where the events that occurred 80 years ago will remain engraved in the national memory.

“Bataan has fallen. The Philippine-American troops on this war-ravaged and bloodstained peninsula have laid down their arms. With heads bloody but unbowed, they have yielded to the superior force and numbers of the enemy.” A radio broadcast message, written by Captain Salvador P. Lopez was announced by Third Lieutenant Normando Ildefonso Reyes. The announcement signaled the surrender of Philippine-Americans to the Japanese troops. With the surrender of about 70,000 Filipino and American soldiers, the so-called Bataan Death March took place, in which about 20,000 soldiers died. As we come to commemorate again the lives of the unknown heroes who fought on the Day of Valor, may it also be a way for us to have the courage to choose what is best for our country in our own ways.

A historical event that was meant to recall the thousands of Filipinos who dedicated their lives to free the country during World War II. Soldiers who bravely laid down their lives to defend our beloved country. Hence, It is not a celebration to commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan if it is not to remember the courage of the Filipinos who fought and gave their lives for the country.
