A Tapestry of Culture and Arts

The Philippines has many different festivals that are celebrated every year in different parts of the country. One of the well-known festivals in our province is the Binatbatan festival or Viva Vigan Festival of Arts in Vigan City locos Sur. In the midst of our gradual recovery from the pandemic, this year we will once again have the chance to gather and celebrate the Binatbatan festival after a year of not celebrating in public due to the pandemic.

The Viva Vigan Festival of Arts is celebrated during the first week of the month of May. The Naturales of Vigan chose “Tres de Mayo” of 1883 in honor of Apo Lakay of the Simbaan a Bassit as an act of thanksgiving for having saved Vigan from a deadly epidemic in 1756. because of this, it became an important festival for the Bigueños as it focuses on the remembrance of Apo Lakay’s deliverance as well as promoting the local fabric, Abel Iloco. Binatbatan is held to commemorate the Abel Iloco hand-loom weaving industry. Wherein The dance depicts how cotton pods are beaten with bamboo sticks to release the cotton fluff called batbat from its seed. Besides Binatbatan street dancing, many more activities take place during the Viva Vigan Festival of Arts, such as calesa parade, exhibits, trade/food fairs, abel-iloco fashion shows, and other exciting events that local and foreign tourists look forward to enjoying.

This event is a great way to showcase our talents, culture and value the historic town of Vigan. It is a large and colorful event that also brings many local and foreign tourists who want to explore and have a "Northern Experience". Now that we have been given the opportunity to celebrate this colorful festival again, may we be especially responsible as we have not completely recovered from the pandemic, so that everyone will be safe and we will have a better chance to celebrate the various festivals even better.
